The Page Seed Company planted the first tree in America as a part of the World Clean Air Forest Initiative (WCAFI) in support of United Nations Environmental Program-Billion Tree Campaign (UNEP-BTC) on Thursday, June 14, at 12:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place at The Page Seed Company located at 1-A Green Street. Local VIPs were on hand to celebrate.
The tree planting supports the World Clean Air Forest Initiative, "One Treebreath at a Time for America." The international goal of WCAFI is to plant 9.1 billion trees, worldwide by March 2050.
The Page Seed Company has partnered with the World Clean Air Forest Initiate to package seeds and assemble the Clean Air Tree kits in support of United Nations Environmental Program/Billion Tree Campaign. One billion trees are supposed to be planted in 2007, worldwide.
"When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and seeds of hope." With this motto, Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Wangari Maathai pledges her patronage for this unique campaign which spans the globe. The planting of trees does not just have the symbolic meaning of creating life and a future that Wangari Maathai mentions.
Re-forestation is a fundamental task in many areas of the world for combating desertification, ensuring the quality of the soil and maintaining the correct balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These issues cannot be underestimated in terms of their significance among today's environmental challenges e.g. brought about by climate change.
According to Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, "Billion Tree Campaign is but an acorn, but it can also be a significant and straightforward expression of common determination to make a tangible difference in developing and developed countries alike."
Lynda S. Granger, President of The Page Seed Company will serve as Product Quality Control advisor to the World Clean Air Forest Initiative National Advisory Council.Page's Seeds has been packaging agricultural and horticultural seeds for 111 years.
